Walked up to camp on Hurst Hill and it was difficult getting the tent up in strong wind and rain. Bad weather continued through the night and I was unable to see any New Year fireworks at midnight. I was able to hear them.

Lunchtime Boxing Day walk up to Carwood Lane footpath where a tree has been hanging across the path for a while. As the diameter is only about 250mm I took a collapsible saw with me to cut it back and stop the possibility of tall people walking into it.

Christmas Day was spent with a drive to White Coppice then a walk via Hollin Ln to Moor Road and reservoir embankment where repair works have closed the road to vehicles. It is still possible to get through on foot. Then up the lane and left onto Anglezarke Moor to New Year campsite then down across rough moor. Stopped by boulder for coffee, sandwich and cake then to Black Coppice & millstones then back down to start.

Wheelton's "Carols Around the Tree" Christmas Eve event  has been going for around 47 years and once again was an incredible success. This year the Parish Council wasn't involved and a team of volunteers took over the organisations. The Nativity children weren't there this year but maybe next time?
Thanks to Steve Brooks for confirming that “No bus timetables were harmed during the event!”

Today is the winter solstice when the sun is at its lowest in the sky and the shortest day. For Whittle-le-Woods sunrise was 08:24 and sunset will be 15:51. Unfortunately the sunrise was obscured by clouds and rain. Earlier I was out for a wander along Preston Rd., Whittle-le-Woods and took this low level view of the pavement and street lights.

Family and friends gathered at Charnock Richard Crematorium this morning to say goodbye to our friend Terry West who died on the 1st Dec at the age of 89.

Over 60 years ago I worked with Terry in the Withnell Fold Paper Mill Joiners Shop. It was my school holidays but I didn’t want to waste my time so I was able to get a temporary job there and Terry was incredibly supportive in teaching me the trade. It was my introduction to working for a living.

Terry was in the Withnell Fold Cricket team.

Today was the Whittle-le-Woods, Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party in the Village Hall. Before the meal we were treated to an excellent performance of Christmas carols sung by the St John's school choir. A huge thanks go to our dedicated band of helpers who served the sumptuous 85 Christmas meals to our Senior Citizens. It was all organised and funded by the Village Hall Trustees with presents for everyone.

A big thanks to all the organisers who made tonight’s (Sun 1st Dec 2024) big switch on of the Whittle-le-Woods Christmas Tree Lights possible.

As always a huge crowd gathered on Waterhouse Green to enjoy live music from the Chorley Silver Band with mulled wine and mince pies to help the celebrations along. Our great friend Cllr Eric Bell died a few weeks ago at the age of 91 so it was fitting that Eric’s widow Pat switched the lights on this year.

I was very sad to hear of the recent death of Terry West (Sep 1935 - 1st Dec 2024). Terry used to live in Withnell Fold and worked at the Withnell Fold Paper Mill.
I was brought up in the village and remembered Terry well from my few weeks working in the mill’s joiners shop during my school holidays in 1963. Terry and Norman Hoyle were the mill carpenters & that's where I had my first taste of working life & earning a wage. Terry was in the cricket team and was a keen sportsman and mountain walker most of his life.
