We had fantastic weather on the last day of summer for the Derian House Children's Hospice fundraising event at the Roebuck, Whittle-le-Woods. Graham Liver was there from BBC Radio Lancashire & DJ Lewis Frazer. Big thanks to all the organisers who set up and stocked the stalls with all sorts of goodies.

Today is the 17th Whittle-le-Woods Flower, Craft & Vegetable show in the Village Hall, Union St. No show in 2020 or 2021The doors open at 14:00 and prizes are awarded at 15:00. There is lots to see and refreshments are available. It's all good but this year's paintings and drawings are exceptional. Plus lots of stuff by local school children.

Lots of work going on along Town lane, Whittle-le-Woods this morning (Sat 24th Aug 2024). Apparently they were on-site shortly after 5am. An interesting way to spend a Bank Holiday weekend!

The view just after 7am.

Late afternoon bike ride via Bamber Bridge to the cycle track by the River Ribble. The reason was to photograph the old Tram Bridge being demolished. About ⅓ has been removed.

Horwich Heritage Centre is very good at putting on special exhibitions. Today is the start of another as they are commemorating 120 years of Lever Park. The exhibition was opened by Cllr Ian Aldcroft, Mayor of Horwich. The park was officially opened for public use on Wed 18th May 1904. The exhibition is on until Thu 14th Nov 2024.

No 1 Shakespeare Terrace and my Uncle Arthur's old front garden had been converted to a hardstanding.

The site of the old St Peter's Club is now a Tesco shop.

I was passing the new Industrial Units at Botany between the Leeds & Liverpool Canal and junct 8 on the M61. With all that roof space it would seem sensible to cover some of it with solar panels. Even make it part of a planning requirement. Another large area is being developed near the Malthouse and it will be interesting to see what they put on the roofs.

Gloomy wet weather greeted an intrepid group of members from Wigan Archaeological Society for a conducted walk over Winter Hill Moors. The objective was to visit the site of the Whimberry Hill Tunnel and Derek & Garry from the Horwich Heritage Group were our guides. The tunnel is a complete mystery as it doesn't seem to serve any practical purpose. The entrance is at the bottom of an overgrown dip in the landscape. We weren’t equipped to go inside but I’ve included interior photos I took on a previous visit with Andy from the Red Rose Caving & Pothole Club when we surveyed the cave.

Garry showing us a possible briken quern stone near the tunnel entrance. I wasn't convinced.

During the week I was walking in the Buckhurst area. I’d heard the Buckhurst Lodgeside Cafe had closed but very sad to see that the site has been completely cleared and no evidence it ever existed. They had lovely cakes and pies. Here are some photos when it was still there.

The cleared site this morning.
