What appears to be a slender footbridge over the River Spodden near Whitworth is all that remains of a Mill building that used to span the river. There were two arches until one was washed away a couple of years ago.

This afternoon I walked to my brothers at Withnell Fold from an excellent Christmas Day meal. The village has fond memories for me as I was brought up there. It is situated down a no thorough road off the A674 about half way between Chorley and Blackburn and was built in 1843/4 by Thomas Blinkhorn Parke (1824 – 1885) as a village to house workers for the adjoining paper mill.
Christmas 50 years ago was not a happy affair as it was in 1967 when the mill ceased making paper after almost 123 years production. The last paper was made on 23rd Dec 1967. Most of the mill buildings have been demolished but the village continues to thrive.
Sun 24 Dec 2017 Christmas Eve
Into its 40th years Wheelton's "Carols Around the Tree" Christmas Eve was an incredible success.
Jointly organised by Wheelton Parish Council, Heapey and Wheelton Village Hall Committee and Heapey Parish Council, local musicians and children in costumes provided the perfect environment for Christmas readings and the singing of traditional carols.
The venue was the War Memorial/Clock Tower in Wheelton village centre and hundreds of people turned up to enjoy the carol singing mince pies and mulled wine.

Night view of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Temple) Chorley seen form the Moss Lane Bridge over the M61 motorway. The church was opened in 1998 and I remember visiting the interior before its official dedication. They didn’t allow photographs inside.

Returned to Withnell Hall, Withnell to take some more refurbishment progress photos. I was last here in Aug 2017 before the work started and it is good to see the workmen have been on site for some time.

Withnell Hall this morning. It was built around 1840 by the Park family.

I wonder who she was?

Christine McVie (of Fleetwood Mac) is one of my favourite singer/songwriter/performers. Today (Sun 17 Dec 2017) she was on the BBC Radio Desert Island Discs programme and it was a delight to listen to.

The December meeting of Chorley Historical and Archaeological Society is traditionally a quiz night, raffle where everyone gets a prize and a sumptuous Jacob's join. The phrase is used to describe a shared meal - where everybody brings something and puts it on a table for people to help themselves.
The evening had a sad tinge to it as it would be the last in the excellent Chorley Library lecture room where we have been meeting for about 11 years. Staffing problems now mean that out of hours meetings can’t be catered for. Our next meeting will be in Trinity Methodist Church Hall, Gillibrand Walks, Chorley. PR7 2HF
After the festivities our Chairperson Joan Dickinson presented some flowers to Elizabeth of the Library staff who has been extremely helpful to our Society over the years.

We had a great afternoon at the Whittle-le-Woods, Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party in the Village Hall Wed 6th Dec 2017. The guest of honour was Chorley's Mayor Councillor Mark Perks who was accompanied by his mother Elsie who is 88 today.
The entertainment started with a superb performance of Christmas carols sung the local school choir.
A dedicated band of helpers served a sumptuous Christmas meal to almost 90 pensioners. It was all funded by the Village Hall Trustees with present for everyone.

Christine Keeler died today (1942- 4th Dec 2017). She was one of the main people involved in the 1963 Profumo affair involving John Profumo, the Secretary of State for War. I was a schoolboy at the time and remember it well. The whole thing was a government white-wash, cover-up & deceit.
Christine and her friend Mandy Rice-Davies (1944–2014) were treated disgracefully. The iconic photo of Christine Keeler was taken by Lewis Morley for publicity purposes in 1963 and the setup/pose has been copied many times since.

The chair used is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The photographic session took place in his studio, which at that time was on the first floor of the ‘Establishment’ 18 Greek Street, Soho, a satirical night club part-owned by Peter Cook of ‘Beyond The Fringe’.

Sun 03 Dec 2017

We had a fantastic evening of carol singing and the official switching on of the Whittle-le-Woods Christmas tree lights at 6pm. There was a huge audience for the event with mulled wine and mince pies provided by the local Council to assist the festivities. The lights were turned on by Ruby Smith who has received a special award for her fundraising for a Cancer charity.

Fri 01  Dec 2017

There was a huge audience for the Clayton-le-Woods Christmas tree lights switch on this evening (Fri 01 Dec 2017) at 7pm. Before the lights were turned on we were treated to carols sung by Clayton Green’s Beavers, Cubs & Scout. The next big Christmas tree lights switch on is Whittle-le-Woods on Sunday 3rd Dec just after 5:30pm.
