Big thanks to Carvers Trees for supplying and erecting our Whittle-le-Woods Christmas Tree this morning on Waterhouse Green. Strong winds & torrential rain yesterday meant they delayed till today as the winds died down.

This morning I was delighted to help leading a group of young students from St John’s School, Whittle-le-Woods on a local history walk. Thankfully a team of teachers & volunteer parents did all the hard work of guiding the children. The main theme
was the Lancaster Canal that used to pass through the village. The canal opened in 1803 and its first and main cargo was coal to feed the local industries. I took a chunk of coal into the classroom as I thought youngsters wouldn't know what it was. About a third did so I was glad to be proved wrong. We walked up Cow Well Lane, Chorley Old Road to the old Canal Basin by the Coop.

St John's School.
It is now filled in and is a play area. I explained the canal project was designed by the famous Engineer John Rennie (1761-1821) as I think people who helped shape the Industrial Revolution should be remembered.

At Brindle Historical Society for excellent presentation by Les French to talk about the Legacy of Frank Hornby.

I used to have a Meccano set like this.

Mechanics made Easy c1907.
A rare lithographed tinplate sign carrying both 'Meccano' and 'Mechanics made Easy# logo from late 1907. Frank Hornby's construction system started as 'Mechanics Made Easy' around 1901 and was relaunched in 1908 as 'Meccano'.
Meccano was trademarked in late 1907 and the new company established in early 1908.

Sun 10 Nov 2024
Today’s Whittle & Clayton-le-Woods Remembrance Sunday procession and service was held under an overcast & rainy sky. The weather didn’t put people off and many turned up for the service by the War Memorial to remember the sacrifice made by those in previous wars and conflicts. The police put a temporary road block in place so this year the procession from the school yard to the memorial was along the road.

Unfortunately we have lost 2 of our greatest supporters this year with the death of Cllr Eric Bell (1933 - 2024) and Cllr John Walker (1939 - 2024).

Temporary road closure for the procession.
