Today astronaut Michael Collins died at the age of 90 (1930 – 28
Apr 2021). He was the Command Module Pilot on the Apollo 11
mission that put Neil Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin on the Moon in
1969. While they were on the Moon's surface he was the loneliest
man in history as he orbited alone around the dark side of the
Moon. I sat up through the night to watch it live on our b&w TV.
He took one of the most remarkable photos ever as the Eagle
returned to Columbia on 21st July 1969 after its explorations of
Tranquility base. The photograph Michael took contains every
living thing in history, except him.

This afternoon I had my second anti-plague (AstraZeneca)
vaccination at the Chorley Surgery on Gillibrand Street,
Chorley. The short queue didn’t last long and once inside I was
vaccinated and out of the back door in a few minutes. The
building has an interesting place in Chorley’s history as it was
built in 1891 and opened in 1893 as the Chorley Cottage
Hospital. The proposal to build it was by Alderman Henry
Rawcliffe and in 1900 was renamed as the Rawcliffe Hospital.
Chorley's new Chorley and District General Hospital was opened
in 1933 on the site of the current Chorley and South Ribble
Hospital at Preston Rd/Euxton Ln. |

Returned to Wales for the first time in many years. I camped

Mid day news announced the death of Prince Philip, Duke of
Edinburgh (10 Jun 1921 – 9 April 2021). He was partly educated
at Gordonstoun School in Scotland. After leaving Gordonstoun in
early 1939 he completed a term as a cadet at the Royal Naval
College, Dartmouth. He served during WW2 and married Elizabeth
at Westminster Abbey 20th November 1947. Their marriage was the
longest of any British monarch, lasting more than 73 years until
Philip's death. |

Since the clocks went forward last weekend my morning walks are
back in the dark. The streetlights help illuminate unusual views
such as manholes lids at ground level. This Stanton & Staveley
Ductile Iron drain lid is on Factory Lane, Whittle-le-Woods. |

On the Wall. |

Sent letter to United Utilities about their demolition of the
wall at Drinkwaters Ruins above White Coppice. I suggested when
they rebuild it they could erect an information board. I include
a copy of this photo of the wall taken by Max Knowles of Chorley
Photographic Society. |
