Today is the autumnal equinox when the length of day and night are the same. There was a clear starry sky for my morning walk through Whittle-le-Woods and I'd hoped to see the stars behind the Whittle & Clayton-le-Woods War Memorial. They didn't show up as I'd hoped.

This morning cycled to Leyland and Jubilee House off Centurion Way to have my Covid vaccination Moderna bivalent

The funeral of Queen Elizabeth II

It was great fun helping out with the ‘Step into the Wild’ group today (Sat 17th Sep 2022) and their Brindle tour of Denham Quarry, the O.S. Trig Post and ROC (Royal Observer Corps) ‘Cold War’ bunker. Tanine did a presentation on the history of the quarry through the centuries then the group moved to the Denham Hill summit Ordnance Survey Trig Post. I was then able to indulge in my passion for maps and the Ordnance Survey by explaining the history of the O.S. and how the trig points were used to make maps. I was even able to fit a 90 year old theodolite to the post and demonstrate how triangulation sightings were made. At the ROC Bunker Michael, of the Brindle ROC Post Restoration Group, explained the bunkers' use through the ‘Cold War’ period in the early 1960s when the UK considered it was under threat from nuclear attack. The post was there to monitor possible nuclear blasts and monitor radiation. There were several visitors from the nearby village of Withnell Fold. This was a trial site visit to see if there is enough interest for future tours. I think there will be as the children really enjoyed climbing 5m down into the nuclear bunker. Watch this space!
