A dark rainy evening may not be everyone's idea of a good time
to go for a walk before tea but it does give a different view
from daylight. I used my head torch to illuminate the old Toll
building and Town Lane Bridge on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
The original was in colour but I thought B&W suited the mood
better. |

Cycled to Brinscall Woods near Brinscall Hall to check out the
ruins in the recent Netflix series ‘Stay Close’ some of the
scenes were filmed around here. Adjacent are the ruins of
Woodside Cottage which I photographed as I had a copy of a
drawing when the property was occupied. |

Some of the old cast iron gas mains in Whittle-le-Woods are
being replaced with polyethylene pipes that come on huge rolls
then welded together. Wherven possible the new pipes are being
threaded through the old ones. This view of a huge roll of 125mm
dia pipe was taken on this morning's walk. The light streaks on
the right are the 125 bus heading for Preston. |

Very sad to hear of the death of Barry Cryer (23 Mar 1935–25 Jan
2022). I’ve loved his humour for as long as I can remember. |

Morning drove to MyVue Blackburn to see the film 'Belfast' by
Kenneth Branagh. It's mostly b&w and semi-autobiographical of
his youth in the late 1960s troubled Northern Ireland. It's
scary in places with lovely emotional attachments between 3
generations of the family. The acting and cinematography are
also rather good. |

Walked to Withnell Fold along a very muddy canal towpath. Met
Paul O’Gorman of Radio Lancashire there shortly after 10am. We
did a short 3min piece on the history of the village. Then got a
lift off him to Birchin Lane and we did another piece about the
weeping stone then the crossroads. Drove on to whittle Spinney
to the St Hellen’s Well celtic cross that Jack Sharples carved. |

This evening I was out for a wander along the Back Lane woodland
path, Clayton-le-Woods. There are a couple of ponds and viewing
platforms and I thought a photo by torchlight would be
interesting. |

I’ve walked past this spot many times while walking through
Whittle-le-Woods and have been intrigued by the shadows the
streetlights shining through the fence cast onto the grass. The
location is the cricket field with St John’s Church in the
background. If anyone is interested the exposure was 30seconds
at f8, iso 800 asa. |

My first wild camp of the year was on Hurst Hill, Anglezarke
Moor, Lancashire (Fri 31 Dec 2021/Sat 01 Jan 2022) to watch the
fireworks displays over Chorley and bring in the New Year of
2022. I’m so glad I was in my Hilleberg Soulo tent as the wind
was very strong where I was at 306m (1,004ft). In the morning a
small gap appeared in the cloud behind the Winter HIll
transmitter mast allowing me to see the first sunrise of the
year. |

First breakfast of the year. Coffee, pasta & haggis.
