Today’s Chorley Walking Day was one of the best I can remember. The glorious weather helped though a few large drops of rain fell at one point. I don’t usually post this many pictures but I wanted to show as much as I could and every one is different. A huge thanks to those who took part and of course the organisers. Together they made it happen.

This morning I attended Southlands High School Chorley to help out with their Speed Networking event for final year students. They are completing their exams and about to leave Southlands for further education and future employment. Representative from employers in the area were there and around 200 students were split into smaller groups so we could speak to each group about their possible futures. I was there as an ex-Southlands pupil and was able to tell them about my further education and career that started 55 years ago. It’s the first time I’ve spoken to so many teenagers and I hope they remembered some of the advice I gave them about coping with the future. They seemed interested and most had good eye contact which is important in future job interviews.

World War 1 officially ended 100 years ago today with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in France on 28th June 1919. The actual fighting ended with the signing of the armistice on 11 November 1918 but it took over six months of Allied negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference to conclude the peace treaty.
The 1919 Treaty explains why many War Memorials show the war dates from 1914–1919 and not the usual 1914–1918. The Whittle and Clayton-le-Woods War memorial shows 1914–1919.
It is said that the conditions imposed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles were so harsh that it lead to World War 2 in 20 years’ time.

When I’m walking on the Cumbria hills I frequently see jets training up and down the valleys. They are usually too far away to get decent photos but on Wed 26th June 2019 I was walking above the Langdale fells and managed to get this snap of a passing jet. It was very noisy!

Before I saw the jet this is a view across Blea Tarn

An early cycle ride to Denham Hill, Brindle was worth it to watch the Summer Solstice sunrise on the longest day. The horizon was in cloud but the sun soon appeared above the cloud.

This evening I cycled back to Denham Hill, Brindle at 09:40pm to watch the Summer Solstice sunset. To the right are radio masts at Inskip 13 miles away. The tallest masts are 180m (600ft) tall.

I was out for a walk over Heron Crag above Stonethwaite Cumbria. It was interesting comapring the view with that of 28th May 2003 when I was there with my friend Eric Bell.

I was out for an evening bike ride and stopped by the Cricket Field in White Coppice. I noticed the Memorial Bench to Miss Elsie Whitehead (1909-2003) had been removed along with the memorial plate. Elsie Whitehead used to live in Rose Cottage (the white building in the background), White Coppice. Her Mother taught at White Coppice School in the 1920s. Elsie Whitehead was head girl at Chorley Grammar School and late qualified as a teacher and was appointed as Head Teacher at Withnell Fold Primary School in 1943. She taught me when I was at school there in the 1950s.

Early evening caught bus to Walton Summit then walked over fields to Chesham Farm. Called in to see the farmer Rick Massey who I haven’t seen for around 45years. Stopped for brew. He said he remembered an old redundant Hydram water pump at the farm when he moved there in 1968. Walked across fields to try and find the site of an old stone cross (now in the grounds of St Joseph’s, Brindle) but no sign of the location. Walking through Brindle photographed the Brindle Old Parish Pound.

This morning I walked along the canal to Withnell Fold Sports and Social Club for the inaugural meeting of the new U3A Group (University of the Third Age) that they are hoping to form. Plenty of chairs were put out and we wondered how many would turn up. It was more popular than anyone could have expected. Around 60 people turned up and all the seats were filled and some had to stand at the back. The vote to form the group was unanimous and plenty volunteered to serve on the committee. One minor disaster was we ran out of cups!

Late morning cycled to Pleasington Crematorium to arrive at 12noon for the opening of the Book of Remembrance. It is 40 years today since Dad died. Steve and Jill drove here and we walked down to plot ‘H’ where Dad and Mum’s ashes are.
