Visited Blackburn Museum with Stuart Whalley and Richard Forkasiewicz to see a hoard of silver pennies which they'd found near Tockholes in 1973. Nick Harling of the Museum showed us the 59 coins which dated from around the 14th century.

After being battered by high winds and torrential rain yesterday I returned in clearing weather.

Two trees against the clearing cloud.

The sun began to break through over flooded fields to the south of Ullswater.

Today was the funeral of George Eckersley of Brandwood Fold. The horse drawn hearse used the track over the fields past Withnell Fold village. It was George and his family’s wish that he was taken this way for the last time. It was a fitting route as he crossed the fields he had farmed for so many decades.

Caught the train to Chester to attend the Council for British Archaeology North-West Regional Group Autumn Conference 2008 at the Grosvenor Museum.

The theme was Roman North-West England: Hinterland or ‘Indian Country’?

I was walking home in warm sunny sunshine when I noticed the datestone on Morris Fold buildings near Wheelton. The cross lighting helped to show up the inscription I H S rebuilt, by Geo Clarkson S. J. S. 1788

Just after driving through Rosgill in Cumbria I saw the sun rising over the Shap hills. The sky kept clear for most of the day and I got a nice view of Sleddale Fell across this small tarn above Mosedale.

I walked home through Brindle and had a look at the Church and some interesting features.

After the Church I passed the site of the old Workhouse. Many despondent people would have walked up and down this lane.
