 |
| Afternoon went for
walk to Jones's Farm, Whittle-le-Woods to photograph the window
where Janie Dodd and friends were photographed over 80 years
ago. |

|
Evening at
Whittle-le-Woods Village Hall to see the show 'The Cheeky
Chappie' by Dave Sealey who performed the career of Max Miller.
An interesting show with anecdotes on the performers life and
samples of his acts. Many other performers from the Music Hall
era were mentioned such as Jimmy James, Rob Wilton, Sandy Powel,
George Formby, Charlie Chester, Arthur Askey etc. |

Caught 7:50am
train with Steve to Manchester Piccadilly. The train was very
crowded and the announcement said it was due to a shortage of
trains. The next stage was the Hull train to Leeds which wasn’t
crowded and we had a seats and good views. At 9:48am left Leeds
on the Carlisle train to travel through the dales and along the
Settle – Carlisle line. At Skipton I taped my GPS unit to the
window to see if I could get a geographical and altitude trace
of the journey to Carlisle. The accuracy wasn’t too good as I
lost the signal from time to time but overall it seemed to work
OK. |

You can't expect people to travel by train when this is what
they get for their overpriced tickets. |
|

Leeds railway station. |
The weather
deteriorated as we got further north but we had views along and
across Dentdale and later Mallerstang. The Pennines at Cross
Fell were almost completely lost in mist and rain. The train
turned up 10 mins. late in Carlisle so we missed our connection
to Preston but there was only a 20minute wait for the next train
which was direct to Manchester Airport, meaning we didn’t have
to change in Preston. |

A stark contrast, left is the
sumptuous Lancastrian Room and on the right the old butter market
in the basement. |

The council chamber with the Mayor and Mayoress is attendance
plus 30 visitors. |

The other side of time. Inside the clock tower (this wasn't part
of the official tour) |

The Withnell Fold
Sports and Social Club first Annual Harvest Walk. Three walks
set off at 11am. 8 set off on the 3mile local history walk, 27
on the 6mile walk and 33 on the 12mile walk. In spite of heavy
rain in recent days the weather was mostly kind even though the
ground remained very wet. The day was a huge success and
congratulations must go to all the competitors, organisers,
leaders and especially the dinner ladies who had wonderful food
waiting for us at the finish. |

| I was
walking below Dovenest Crag in Borrowdale when I recognised the
rock face shown in the climbing diagram made my Millican Dalton
(see Fri 29 Aug 08) of his climbing exploits in 1914. |
