This evening saw the official opening of Chorley Photographic Society’s annual exhibition at Astley Hall. It was opened by Mr. Norman Thompson DPAGB LBIPP the President of the Lancashire & Cheshire Photographic Union (L&CPU).

Some of the painted wooden panels in the main hall have been cleaned. They are thought to date from the early 1600s.

You'd think that the sign below was clear enough. It was in the window of  The Book Clearance Centre, Market Walk, Chorley. When I went in to buy 3 books at £1.99 I was told the offer only applied to selected fiction titles. You'd think they were contravening the trade Descriptions Act. They were in fact trading under an obscure legal phrase called 'Invitation to Treat'. Which means they can advertise at what price they like and they don't have to sell you anything. So much for the law, what an ass?

Today was the last service at the Wheelton Methodist Church in Higher Wheelton. The church opened in Aug 1842. A congregation of 32 attended the service by Rev Andrew Mashiter. The hymns were chosen to suit the occasion and the final hymn, ‘The day thou gavest’ written by John Ellerton (1826-93), contained the suitable line ’The dawn leads on another day’

The last service.

The last congregation.

This evening was the first summer photo outing of Chorley Photographic Society. We had a look at the Ice House next to Worden Hall, Leyland. It is similar in construction to the one at Cuerden Hall.

Looking down into the Ice House.

Called to see Jack on the way home and he was converting an old stone gate-post into a stone seat. The scroll design is beginning to emerge from the stone as Jack chips away.

It is 29 years today since my father died. His name is in the Remembrance Book at Pleasington Crematorium so I cycled there through the rain to see the entry.
