Reuben Boyes |
|
I met Reuben Boyes on a sponsored caravan
tow from Dumfries to Edinburgh and back. Reuben was originally from
Penrith but moved to Dumfries many years ago. Four years ago he
suffered a double brain hemorrhage and was rushed to hospital in
Dumfries where he was in a coma for three weeks with a 20%
chance of survival. The medical team managed to save his life
and after Reuben battled his way back to fitness he decided to
show his appreciation by building his own self-contained caravan
that he would haul along for charity. It has rear lights with
solar charging and all the amenities he needs. He completed the
outward journey to Edinburgh a few days ago and is now on the
return leg. |

Enjoyed a great Monday evening photo outing with Chorley
Photographic Society at the Top Lock and Leeds & Liverpool
Canal, Wheelton. We were fortunate to have the ‘Whistle Down the
Wind’ steam barge moor up on her way from Barrowford. The owner
is Geoff Laycock and he and his crew gave us a view inside to
see the coal fired steam engine. |

The name ‘Whistle Down the Wind’ is after the 1961 film of the
same name starring Hayley Mills and Alan Bates. Goeff lived in
Downham at the time and as a young boy was in the film when they
filmed in his village. |

For 100 years Chorley Hygienic Laundry and later Initial
Solutions had been a major industry and employer in Chorley. The
first building (m4295) was erected at the junction of Harpers
lane and Eaves Lane, Chorley in 1906 and the laundry began
operating in 1907. By the end of 2007 the days of laundering
were almost over. The buildings were boarded up and eventually
partially demolished in 2009. |

However, the outer framework of the original 1907 building
was used to reconstruct a new building of industrial units.
The award winning firm of Bowen Pies of Adlington took full
advantage of the new units to move their production into a
custom made area. Although they are continuing to supply their
pies to many outlets across the North West they have a new shop
in the building at the top of Harpers Lane across from the
Masons Arms and Costcutter. |

Just before Drinkwater's ruin there is a new memorial by
the existing Joe's Cup memorial. it refers to Joe Whitter (1939
- 1991) who was a distance runner with Wigan Phoenix Running
Club. |

Joe's Cup Poem from the
Wigan
Phoenix Running Club website
Climbing, climbing this
scenic spot, Our fellowship means such a lot. Reaching,
reaching this wondrous place; Effort worth more than any
race.
Joe's Cup, Joe's Cup: we love Joe's Cup, Brimful
of water which we sup; Breathing, breathing this enriched
air; A special moment all can share.
Running, Running
our common link: A treasured Time to stop and think.
Memories, memories come flooding back: So much into our lives
we pack.
Stillness, stillness, countryside sound,
Enjoying the peace all around. Standing, standing close to
the mast Rememb'ring runners of the past.
The man, the
man whose name the Cup, A lively spirit always up.
Training, training often this way, Joe thrived in these fells
on display.
Great Hill, Great Hill ahead she stands
Part of the wide world in our hands. Return, return, our
strength renewed This hill time for the greater good. |

With nice weather I returned to Scoraig on a remote peninula
south of Ullapool, Scotland. I wanter to visit the Scoraig
Primary School. The class teacher is Stuart Benjafield and he
gave me a conducted tour of the school interior as soon as the
children had gone out to have their lunch. There are 5 pupils.
There is no road access or mains electricity. |

In the late 1830s brothers Robert and John Park acquired large
parts of Withnell, Brinscall and Wheelton and built cotton mills
in Abbey Village and Withnell. John Park built Ollerton Hall and
Robert built Withnell Hall. Both were built in the late 1830s.
New buildings were added to Withnell Hall to become the Lake
View Nursing Home. The main stone build Hall was neglected and
left in a bad state of repair. Prior to that it was called
Withnell Pulmonary Hospital. Lake View Nursing Home closed in
2015 and the site became even more derelict. The site is
being investigated for refurbishment and
Brindle
Homes are planning to bring the Hall back in to use by
converting it to several separate dwellings. I was allowed
escorted access this morning to photograph the interior,
equipped with hard hat and high viz. jacket. It will be
wonderful to see this historic building brought back in to use. |

There have been many Facebook posts recently about local men who
died in WW1 but I thought it worth mentioning one soldier who
returned home. 1483 Pte. Howard Roberts (born 1896) of the Loyal North
Lancashire Regiment fought on the Somme but was taken prisoner
100 years ago today on 8th Aug 1916. He spent the rest of the
war as a P.O.W. He started work at Withnell Fold Paper Mill
between Chorley and Blackburn in 1910 and was one of 83 men who
enlisted from the mill. 14 of those men were killed including Pt
James Miller V.C.
Howard Parry Roberts (1896 - 1972) died
aged 76. |

Howard said later that if he hadn’t been captured he would have
been one of the dead. He returned home after the war to continue
his career at the mill and get involved in many pursuits. He was
a member of the local Withnell Fold Cricket team, Bowls team,
WW2 Home Guard and even played in the Alban Yates Band.
There is more information about Howard on the Loyal North Lancs
website via
this link.

The Battalion setting off for the
trenches in 1916 |
In 1936 Howard was the choirmaster
and wrote the words for a vesper hymn but couldn't find a tune
in the hymn book to fit the words. He asked his friend and
musician Kathleen Ferrier (1912-1953) if she could compose a
tune, which she did. Kathleen married Albert Wilson from
Withnell Fold in 1935 but the marriage was not a success.
However, Kathleen then started her singing career and became one
of the World's greatest contralto singers. Many thanks to
Joyce for copies of the various photos. |
