This morning was the unveiling of the memorial stone flag at Withnell Fold, Chorley to commemorate Pt James Miller V.C. who was killed on the Somme 100 years ago on 30th July 1916. Before enlisting he worked at the adjacent Withnell Fold Paper Mill. The inscription on the stone states 30-31 July for his death and eye witness accounts state that he was injured on the 30th but was carried from the battlefield and probably died later, possibly 31st July.

The Pt James Miller V.C.
For his actions he was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross which was presented to his father by King George V at Buckingham Palace. The event was extremely well attended with Chorley’s Mayor Cllr Doreen Dickinson, executives from Chorley Council, Regimental representatives, family member descendants of James Miller and many local residents.
After the service there was an illustrated presentation about Pt James Miller V.C. in Withnell Fold Chapel by local historian Steve Williams. During WW1 83 men enlisted from Withnell Fold Paper Mill and 14 were killed.
The Victoria Cross Medal was presented to The King's Own Royal Regiment Museum, Lancaster on 23 Sep 1989 and is now on public display.
The Withnell Fold Memorial Garden was constructed in the basin of the first mill lodge built in 1843. The lodge was cleared, landscaped and dedicated as a 'Garden of Remembrance' on 24th Apr 1958.

Drove home via the Scottish Borders to visit Ferniehirst Castle near Jedburgh to go on the afternoon guided tour by Bob Lawson.
I first visited in 1966 when the castle was a youth hostel

A tough walk over Beinn Ghobhlach to Scoraig. Scoraig is an isolated community on the peninsula with no road connection. The only way in and out is by sea or a long walk from the minor road at Badrallach.

Community housing is self-build

The old lighthouse has been moved and is now a museum

This looks like an extension to the school but seems to be used a community hall.

Cycling in to Edinburgh I called at Leith Harbour. I as there to see the ex Royal Yacht Britannia but on the way saw the ‘Fingal’ built in 1963 and worked to bring supplies to some of Scotland’s most remote lighthouses. The artist Ciara Phillips did the dazzle design.

Set off on 06:40 train to Lockerbie. The town was devastated in 1988. On 21 December 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 exploded in mid-air and most of the wreckage landed on Lockerbie and the surounding area. 243 passengers, 16 crew and 11 people on the ground died.

Thanks to all the spectators who turned out to cheer the cyclists riding through Whittle-le-Woods on their Iron Man UK triathlon which finishes in Bolton. Those who complete the course will have done a 2.4 mile swim a 112 mile cycle ride and then a 26.2 mile marathon. That is an amazing achievement and anyone who didn’t finish made the attempt, which takes a lot of training and courage.

On the run up to the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal there was an exhibition held this afternoon on the canal at the Top Lock, Wheelton. Also on display was the barge 'Kennet'. She was open to visitors with information boards inside and volunteers on hand to answer questions.
She was built in 1947 and is a 62 ft (18.9 m) Leeds and Liverpool barge of steel plate construction with a Lister JP3M diesel engine. She carried cargo on the canal until 1960 then was subsequently used for canal maintenance.

The village of Withnell Fold between Chorley and Blackburn was built in 1843/4 to house workers for the adjacent Paper Mill that operated from 1844 to its closure in 1967. I worked in the mill during my school holidays in 1963 & 64. During that time I was in the Joiners Shop and worked with head joiner Norman Hoyle and Terry West.
I spent my first wages on a 35mm Halina camera and second hand enlarger. This photo of Norman Hoyle taken in 1964 is one of the first taken on my new camera. Panatomic-X film at 32asa.

This morning I visited the Whittle and Clayton-le-Woods War memorial shortly before 07:30am.
Today is the 100th anniversary of the WW1 Battle of the Somme which started at 07:30am 100 years ago.
The main remembrance services are in Chorley but I wanted to visit my local memorial. Several men whose names are on the memorial were killed on the first day of the battle.
There was a nationwide two minutes silence at 07:28 and one other person was there.
