Not what you want to wake up to when cycle touring
Snow was forecast and it started during the night and continued as I
was packing up. Things looked bad as I wheeled my bike to the cycle
track and tried to ride. The snow was only about 50mm deep but there
was no grip and continuing would be dangerous. I had no choice but
to return the way I’d come yesterday and try and follow the roads to
Edinburgh. I set off back the way I’d come yesterday and had to ride
with extreme care. Instead of going all the way back I left the
cycle trail at Harpers Brae car par and headed up the road.

It was very steep and covered in snow so there
was no grip. I had to get off and push. Even pushing it was hard to
get up due to lack of grip with my feet. At the top of the hill I
asked directions about the best way to Edinburgh. I continued along Eastfield then round a diversion to reach the main A766 Edinburgh
Road. There hadn’t been any gritting but the traffic had reduced the
snow to slush and I was able ride with care. It continued to slow
heavily. The first place sign I saw was for Milton Bridge. I
continued on the A701 and crossed under the Edinburgh By-pass and
got a brief bit of shelter. At the next set of traffic lights I was
puzzled by the sign sending me right for the city centre. Instincts
said straight on and when I reviewed my route later I was right. I
reached a shop where I stopped to buy a pack of hot cross buns. I
continued north until I reached Melville Drive where I crossed to
the Jawbone Cycle track across the park. Middle Meadow Walk took me
up to Greyfriars Place and on to Lawnmarket and over the brass plate
marking the site of the public gallows. Down the hill I reached
Edinburgh Waverley Railway Station. Because I’d avoided my original
longer route because of the snow I was very early and had a long
time to wait. Across the main waiting area is an enclosed waiting
area by the ticket desks and this was much warmer. I asked and was
allowed to wait here. My train was 14:19 Trans Pennine Express to
Preston. At Carlisle we were delayed as we waited for a replacement
driver. Once underway were going so slow the motorway traffic at
Tebay was going faster than we were. We arrived in Preston at 17:17
and on board announcement said we could be legible for a delay
compensation. I made it exactly 30mins late. My claim was rejected.
