There was quite a bit of rain overnight but by 8am seemed to be
brightening up so packed the camp away. I hadn’t been walking
long when the rain returned so I sheltered under the trees just
past Drinkwater’s ruins. It soon stopped so I continued along
the track across Heapey Moor.
Drinkwater's ruins.
Distant view of the Chorley Mormon
Temple.
Preston on the skyline.
There were nice views of the Mormon Temple at Chorley and also
directly ahead was Preston on the horizon. St Walburge's Church
is on the left with its 94m (309ft) spire, the third tallest in
the United Kingdom and the tallest on a parish church. In the
centre is Tulketh Mill and its 56m (184ft) chimney. I was
surprised that I hadn’t seen anyone out walking. I headed down
into the pine trees of Wheelton Plantation but instead of
descending by my usual route by Marsden’s ruins and the
following steep descent I continued down along the boundary line
and ditch.
Through Brinscall Pine Woods.
Carrying backpacking kit and heavier load than usual I wanted to
save the stress in my legs. I reached the main track down from
Blackhurst and soon reached the bridge over the Goit. I followed
Trigg lane, over the bridge spanning the old railway and on to
Chapel lane. On the way I passed the site of the Rose Bud Beer
House of which all traces have vanished. I’ve often wondered
what it was like. I was then on the road and an easy walk up to
St Barnabas’ Church then down to Town Lane and home.
