Holmfirth and Sid'sCafe, a 'Last of the Summer wine' location.
It was much cooler this morning as I set off west along the Barnsley Road. i continued to Holmfirth where I stopped outside Sid’s Cafe used in the filming of the TV series ‘Last of the Summer Wine’. It was still ealy and they were closed. I stopped on the bridge to look at he plaque commemorating the various floods and loss of life in the area. Then up a side street to visit the location of Nora batty’s house then up onto the main A6024 which I soon left to take the right fork up the A635 Greenfield Road over Saddleworth Moor. I was apprehensive about the climb as I knew it was steep at first from comments on a previous ride over.

I got up the steepest bit OK but further up it was relentless and I had a strong head wind and lots of traffic. I did quite a bit of pushing. Near the highest point I reached the point I’d originally planned for camp 2. It was grim and I’m glad I wasn’t able to reach it yesterday. Then it was a long steep descent into Greenfield where I pressed on to Oldham. The roads were extremely busy and I wasn’t enjoying the ride. Through Chadderton and Middleton I reached Whitefield and decided to ride on to Bolton and get the train there back to Chorley.

SIn Bolton and the house Fred Dibnah (1938 - 2004) used to live

On Radcliffe Road I stopped for a quick look at Fred Dibnah’s old house before continuing to Bolton Railway Station. I bought a £4.35 ticket and didn’t hav long to wait for the train back to Chorley. Then a short ride home.

On the train Bolton to Chorley.
