Sun 24 Jul 2011
Another cold night down to 5degC but this time I was higher and
didn’t have long to wait for the sun to rise above Beinn Bhearnach.
With morning sun and a bit of wind it was nice to pack an almost dry
tent. I was away by 07:30am and started with a nice easy descent to
the River Lussa.

Loch Spelve
approaching Duart Castle
This is where I’d originally planned to camp but
I’m glad I didn’t as the trees would have helped the midges. It soon
warmed up when I reached the valley bottom so I was able to remove
my windproof top. I had plenty of time before the ferry was due so I
took the single track lane to Duart Point to have a look at Duart
Castle which dates back to the 13th century.
Duart Castle
near journey's end at Duart Castle
It was still before 9am
so the castle was close and nobody about. I was still able to look
around the grounds. Continuing my ride to the Craignure ferry I
stopped at Torosay Castle to have a look but hat was closed as well. I
continued in to Craignure but the ferry didn’t leave till 10:55.
Torosay Castle
abandoned railway station on Mull
I
had a look round the old railway station which is now closed. It was
a narrow gauge that used to go as far as Torosay Castle, which is
probably less than a mile away. It was very pleasant sitting around
in the warm sun waiting for the ferry. I was back on Mull before
midday and cycled back up to the long stay car park to find to my
relief my car was still there and in one piece. The drive home was
easy and uneventful.
