There was no calm night as with
previous nights. The wind was blowing through most of it but had
dropped quite a lot by morning. It was still fairly hazy but by the
time I set off had cleared a bit. I headed straight up to the summit
of Wetherlam, making sure to keep to the easier and safer grassy
bits. |

Mist rolling down the valleys |
Over the summit was
a great view across Coniston Water and the southern fells. I took my
time as I was only planning to catch the 10:05 bus. As always I kept
a look out for possible water supplies but all I could see was a
small tarn at 640m but at least there were good views nearby. I
reached the old miner’s track at Hole Rake and dropped down to the
main disused Coniston Copper mines area. |
|
The track now
starts to improve as it approaches Coniston and also more people
were about. I had a look at the Ruskin Museum, from the outside as
it costs £4.50 to go inside. One of the Rolls Royce Merlin engines
of a crashed Halifax Bomber is stored outside. The curator was
outside watering flowers so I told him about the other engine still
below Great Carrs. |

Journey's end. The bus stop in Coniston |
He doubted its
existence and seemed uninterested in it. I continued to the bus stop
and waited in the sunshine for the 10:05 bus to Windermere where
after a wait I caught the direct train back to Chorley. |
