I didn't get to see a sunrise because
of cloud which was down to my level. By mid morning it had lifted a
bit and I could watch it rolling over the hilltops. Today's stage is
quite short so I didn't set off until just after 10am. It would have
been easier to cross to Windscarth Wyke by the sheep track I used
yesterday but I decided to continue up Long Rigg just in case there
was a good view from the top.
The Calf and trig point
Approaching Yarlside
As it turned out
there wasn't as the weather was deteriorating with lower cloud and
increasing winds. I was now on the main path and followed it over
Breaks Head. I could see the trig post on the summit of The Calf and
several people around it. By the time I arrived there was nobody
about. I followed the main path to the NE which heads roughly
towards Cautley Spout. I had to leave it after a while to pick my
way down the steep slope to Bowderdale Head.
The huge profile of Yarlside loomed up
ahead and that's where I'm heading. The wind was getting stronger
and the forecast was for it to increase. I reached the saddle at
590m and crossed over to the eastside of Yarlside to find some
shelter from the westerly wind. The small stream was still running
so I was OK for water. The flat spot I'd used for a previous camp
seemed a bit too exposed so I looked further to the north and found
an area with more shelter.
