A wet and windy night. I didn't sleep
too well because the pitch is sloping slightly sideways. I could
just see down to Grasmere but all around was cloud. I was in no
particular rush to get off but packed away in light rain and set off
in the rain at 7:55. With all the rain we've had this year and
constant rain since yesterday the ground is running with water. The
path across Brownrigg Moss is distinct and easy to follow. I'm
surprised that the head of Far Easedale Gill doesn't have a name. My
route was now straight up Mere Beck which is a boundary and has a
line of old metal fence poles to mark it. The path was easy to
follow at first but soon became faint and I lost it a couple of
times.
Nothing much to see as I left camp.
It was
difficult going in the constant rain and I soon realised I would
have a major job to reach my planned destination in these bad
weather conditions. With clear weather it would be enjoyable and not
a problem. Half way up the climb I decided to re-plan my schedule
and camp at the first suitable spot, shelter from the rain and hope
the weather may improve tomorrow. The wind had got up again and I
managed to find some shelter in a hollow near Codale Head. The
altitude was 700m where I camped. It was very early at 9:40am but
I'd made right decision as the weather wet and horrible all through
the day and very bad for walking on steep fells.
