It was nice to wheel my bike over Harpers Lane
Rail Bridge which is now open to pedestrians. I wonder if there
where will an opening ceremony when the first vehicles drive
over. |

This afternoon I
attended Fulwood United Reformed Church to say goodbye to my
great friend and ex-colleague Alastair Mathieson.
Alastair died after a long battle
with Pulmonary Fibrosis. He leaves behind his wife Irene,
daughter Elaine and son Ian.
I worked with
Alastair for many years and found him to be an excellent
colleague who knew his job well, did it well and could be relied
on at all times. After he retired I visited him frequently and
we had wonderful conversations and could always put the world to
rights.
I will miss Alastair. |

1pm was the
Withnell Fold Sports and Social Club walk, starting from the
Cricket Field as usual. Even with fine warm weather the turnout
was disappointing as we were a total of only 5. We set off
across the fields to Brandwood Fold then down the path to Stony
Flat Bridge over the Leeds and Liverpool canal and on the
towpath. At Brown House Bridge, no 86, was a recently fixed sign
pointing to the path over the bridge to the Golden Lion Pub. We
carried straight on to Simpson Fold Bridge where we left the
canal and headed down the steep path to cross over the River
Lostock wooden footbridge. |

By the River Lostock wooden footbridge |
We
crossed the fields towards Top o’ th’ Lane but avoided the
buildings by taking the path across to Holt Farm. The route of
the path through the farm isn’t very obvious but Dean had walked
it previously and checked the route with the farmer. We crossed
the next fields to Thorpe Green at Sandy Lane. Our route was
down Pippin Street but I had a quick look for the tennon top
gatepost that should be at the junction. Unfortunately I
couldn’t find it. |
Down Pippin Street
we passed Gorton Brook Farm then through the concrete underpass
below the M65 motorway. We walked to the south edge of Haddock
Park Wood and followed the path by recently ploughed fields.
Judging by the dead grass at the edge of the fields it looked as
though weed killer had been sprayed before ploughing. After a
farm access track bridge over the motorway we joined Smithy Lane
Brindle. We didn’t go in to Brindle but followed the path
directly across fields towards Marsh Lane Farm on Marsh Lane.
Just as we entered the first field we saw a metal detectorists
in the field then noticed some more in a further field. Halfway
across the fields we’d counted 8 of them. |

To the Golden Lion |
We turned left at
Marsh Lane for a short way then right into the fields again to
walk through lush grass to Whave’s Brook and across to the canal
at Ollerton Bridge no. 2 at the bottom of Whave’s Lane. Dean’s
original plan was to follow paths through the fields from
Ollerton but they were full of skittish cows so we followed the
canal path back to Withnell Fold and up the road back to the
Cricket field. Audrey had the usual spread of refreshments ready
for our return. |

wonder if any other gold medallists have two or more. |

Arinagour, Coll. The main street |

Seen near Clabhach, Coll |

Between
Arinagour, Coll and the ferry terminal is this Harpoon Gun
mounted by the road.
It was salvaged by divers from the wreck of the Nevada that ran
aground off the north west coast of Coll in July 1942. She was a
cargo ship and not a whaler as you may expect with such a
harpoon on board. |
The ferry arrives
at Arinagour, Coll to take me back to Oban. |

Refitted tyres to my rebuilt wheels then enjoyed a bike ride via
Tockholes and Anglezarke. The rims were worn out and needed
replacing. |

At the same time I fitted new bearing shells to the bottom
bracket. It's a straightforward job to replace but they don't
last very long. |

Cycled to
Chorley Photographic Society for the first meeting of the new
season. It is one of the oldest societies in Chorley and has
been going for almost 120 years. This is my 43rd continuous
year, meaning I’ve been a member for over a third of the time it
has existed. Now I feel old. |
