I got a lift to Penrith Railway Station from Steve and Adrian. It was a little before 9am when I arrived to a very wet bus stop. There had been heavy rain all night at home and it was still raining heavily. I have a ticket for a Doug Scott lecture tonight at the Rhegen Centre so I plan to camp nearby. I'd managed to find a site that would take my tent after much telephoning earlier in the week. It was Tymparon Hall in Newbiggin, a few miles to the west. Partly because of the rain and partly because I didn't fancy lugging my pack along the main road I decided to catch the bus. The 105 service is listed as passing nearby so I caught the one that left the station at 9:20. It is listed as the Greystoke service so I asked the driver how close I could get to the campsite. He said we would pass through Newbiggin on the way back so I bought a £1.65 single ticket and sat back to enjoy the ride. We went through Stainton, Penruddock, Greystoke and eventually Newbiggin where the driver dropped me off right outside the campsite at 9:55am. It was still pouring with rain as I walked up to the only door I could see in the main building.

Tymparon Hall, Newbiggin, Penrith.

I knocked several times but there was no answer. I asked someone on the site and was told to check at the caravan. A man appeared at the awning who seemed a little perplexed by my presence but I paid him my £5 and set off to pitch the tent before getting too wet. The rain continued all through the morning and into the afternoon before it stopped.
The reason I'd camped near to Penrith and far from the hills is that I have a ticket for Doug Scott's presentation on his climb of the Ogre which he is giving at the Rheged centre. After tea I set off walking along the road back to Stainton. It was heavily overcast but the rain held off. I took my time and took in the views of the various buildings along the way. I took the long way round in Stainton and arrived at Rheged in good time. As I approached the main entrance Doug was there with his car while he unloaded various boxes of prints and books. I offered to help carry some stuff in for him and so was briefly Doug Scott's sherpa. It was an exceptionally good lecture. Just before 10 I set off back along the darkening lanes and arrived at my tent about 10:45pm.
