Managed to get away for a dark drive north along the M6. Being a Saturday it was much quieter than weekdays as there were hardly any HGVs. I reached Mungrisdale and parked on the verge just before the village. My plan is a short walk so I set off to climb Raven Crags to the north. For several days the weather has been still overcast and very dull. Today was no exception. The tops were obscured by clouds so I knew what to expect.

The Tongue from Mungrisdale.
As I walked along the road a couple of walkers had just left their car and walked the same way, to the Village Hall then up the steps to the rear and across the field towards the church. I stopped to take a photo and they continued bye. They took the turn towards Raven Crags but continued up the track towards Bullfell Beck.
Old buiding at the
start of the climb.
I followed the indistinct path that heads steeply up towards the crags. After a while I looked back and saw them below coming up the same way as me. I assume they'd missed the turn, realised their mistake and corrected it. The path was easy going and straightforward to follow. I headed steadily upwards and each time I cooled back they were the same distance away.
Bowscale Fell summit.
It wasn't long before I was in cloud and the temperature dropped to just above zero. When the gradient flattened I reached the low cairn and decided to head a short way off the path and down to the north to find shelter to eat my butties. I found a sheltered spot I’d used before. Sitting eating an early lunch soon got chilly and I was glad to be underway again. Still in mist I pressed on ahead to warm up and reach the low stone shelter on Bowscale Fell. The temperature was now down to -1degC. Just before the summit a couple has stopped to eat their sandwiches.

Descent.
It was still misty and cold and they didn’t look comfortable. Over the summit the descent is an easy gradient down then I reached the left branch to head east down a steady path down the north side of Bannerdale. The main walkers of the day were now coming up and older ones exchanged pleasantries with the younger ones ignored me. I continued down and had some views as I reached the footbridge. The section where stone slabs were placed for the path had a lot of people crossing them At the Millstone Inn I crossed the footbridge then the short walk along the road to my car. The length of verge was now full of cars. I put some money in the parking donation box. The suggested amount used to be £2, which I always paid. Recently they've increased the donation to £4 which is too much.
