The nights are getting longer and the first part of my drive
along the M6 was very dark. As I reached Wanthwaite Bridge the
sun was just coming up and hitting Blencathra. Extensive
refurbishment work was going on at Wanthwaite bridge House and
builders' vehicles were everywhere. I set off along the long
straight lane towards Yew Tree Farm which was still in the
shade. The farm has now been empty for a couple of years and is
now looking rather dilapidated. I remember speaking to the
farmer some years ago when it was working. |

Up at the Outward Bound Building the lights were on and a large
van with ‘Oak Field School Lord's Taverners Giving Young People
a Chance’ on the back doors. There was no sound as I passed and
nobody outside. Through the gate I turned left to head up the
hillside and stop briefly at the stone memorial to David Gerald
Pennycook. He died aged 10 in 1964 of leukaemia. His ashes were
scattered here. |

The clear weather continued as I followed the path up to the
summit cairn on High Rigg north summit. I’ve visited the spot
several times but it's always been overcast or raining. Today is
the first time I've seen it in sunshine with lovely views all
around. With not much time available I continued south and on
reaching the high site over the wall turned right to follow the
wall down to the track on the west side of the fell. |

The track soon reached the road as I headed north then up over
the unsurfaced track back to the church. Back at the parking
area near Wanthwaite Bridge were many more builders' vehicles.
The refurbishment cost of the house must be astronomical. |
