A relatively short walk today. The weather forecast was good but the motorway drive was gloomy towards Penrith. I reached the laybye south of Mungrisdale and found one car was already there. I set off south along the road and crossed the River Glenderamackin over the footbridge near High Beckside.
Gates
Then I continued south along the lane by Far Souhrrfellside and on to the point at the south of Souther fell where the path starts up the fell. It was a pleasant and easy walk but must be frustrating to drive due to the several gates. The path is is steady and enjoyable but higher up on the fell became indistinct and I finished up taking a higher route above the actual path.

Along the lane.

Far Southerfell.

Gloomy at first.

Towards Clough Head.

Clough Head from Souther Fell.

Blencathra from Souther Fell.
It wasn’t until the main path above Mousthwaite Comb that the way was clear. I could see several walkers on the slopes on Blencathra, The gradient was steady and easy as I wandered up to the cairn which isn’t on the summit. There were lovely view of Blencathra and quarries to the west. I didn’t continue to the next summit but took the wet branch to the right to join the diagonal path on the east side of the fell.

Souther Fell cairn.

Path on the descent.
The descent path is a well engineered track in an almost straight line down the fellside. A few streams have eroded some of the path away. Down at the lane I continued to the Mill Inn and back via the footbridge over the river towards the village centre building then right back along the lane to the car.
