A couple of weeks ago I visited the old lead mine below Wolfcrag near the Old Coach Road above Dockray. This morning I decided to re-visit to see if I could get further in. My friend Andy had already offered to return with me to do a survey of the mine but I didn’t want to waste his time if there wasn’t much there.

I parked at High Row under gloomy skies and set off west along the Old Coach Road. The recent rain made quite a lot of it very wet. I followed my previous route along the track and left at the right bend before Barbaryrigg Fold. Turning left across open rough ground I was able to traverse the base of Wolf Crags until I came to the mine’s spoil heap. It wasn’t very large so indicated the mine workings wouldn’t be too extensive. I put my wading socks with Karrymat inserts ready for the wet part of the mine.

I crouched down through the ferns at the entrance then down into the water above the floor. I had a better LED light with me but there was a slight bend in the tunnel ahead. The water was about 300mm deep with mud at the bottom. As I waded round the bend I was able to see ahead along a straight stretch and soon saw the end of the tunnel.

It was about 30m in. I returned to the entrance and continued walking along the base of Wolf Crags to the west. The crags above were very steep but I soon came to a grassy ridge heading up which was quite easy to trek up. At the top of the crag i soon reached the very wet track coming down from Great Dodd. Back at the Coach Road it was a pleasant walk back to the car.

Lady Muck seen on a van in the car park.
When I was a lad we'd say to any young girl who got above herself “Who do you think you are - Lady Muck?”. Probably not allowed now but I snapped this firm's name on a van. I said to the driver you have to be of an age to know what it means. She did & laughed.
