Milestone. |
Hut by the track. |
As I’d spent the night in the Glen Tilt car park I was able to
get an early start. There had been lots of wind and rain
overnight but at first light just a bit of drizzle remained. I
set off along the road to Old Blair and reached the crossroads
where I turned right to follow the route out onto the high
moors. I was keeping an eye out for milestone markers but the
first one I couldn’t find. Once in the woodland there was a
branch in the track where the right branch headed down to the
rifle range and my way was left and up onto the moor.. At the
same location the map showed another milestone but I couldn't
find any sign of it.The track continued easily up the glen above
to a wooden hut. There was no window so it seemed to be just for
storage and not for shooting party beaters. Further up the paper
map just shows the track heading up Elrig but the on-line maps
show the track continuing up by the river. |
Ford on the way to the bothy. |
I came to a ford that was quite high due to the rain. I could
have waded across up over my knees but the map showed the track
crossing back across the river further up the valley. I decided
to stay on the left of the river across some wet ground but it
was better and quicker than taking time to take my boots and
socks off. Occasionally windy drizzle blew across but I got some
sunny gaps in the weather and also some distant views. The track
seemed to have been here a while and I wondered why it wasn’t on
the paper map. At the highest point I could see down the
Shicheach valley and the track zig zagged steeply down to the
ford across the river. On the other side I joined another track
to descend to the bothy. Part way down I met a walker heading
up. He was climbing the mountain and his accent said he was
probably a Yorkshireman. Approaching the bothy the river was
rather high and not passable where the track was. I didn't have
to go far downstream to find a spot where I could easily hop
over. The bothy was extremely pleasant inside so this is where I
sat down to enjoy my slightly squashed sandwiches. |

Lunchstop in the bothy. |
Sheichachan Bothy |
I set off to return by the track I’d com up here last month.
Just south of the bothy the map showed a milestone but there was
no sign of it by the track. |
Substantial cairn. |
2 mile milestone. |
|
As I walked south There was one shown every mile and I
managed to find them tucked in the heather. They are relatively
small and not obvious. The last I found before reaching Whim
Plantation had a ‘2’ carven in it. In the plantation I was on
the main estate track and walked easily down to the road at Old
Blair then back to the car. |
