I reached lamb bridge on the old Keswick - Penrith Road
where i knew there would be some shelter from the sun if it came
out. I followed the road east for a short way then turned off
south to follow the minor road to Wallthwaite. |
Amongst the old buildings is a large and impressive
horse stables that looks quite new. It's strange how it got
planning permission. Further along the lane I turned right
continuing south and up over the old railway. ‘Private signs’
are up but the railway area is a jungle. |
Road to Lobbs. |
Across Sandbed Moss. |
A house adjacent seems empty and building works going one. It
was the same when I last passed over 3 years ago.I continued to
the end of the tarmac at Highgate Close which seems like a
working farm. Then it was up a gravel track to Lobbs which seems
to be a private house but nobody about. My next objective was
the Old Coach Road and i had to cross Sandbed Moss. |
Looking down Mosedale Beck. |
I’ve been this way before and knew it would be a wet soggy slog
across the bog. The first part of the route was indistinct and
very wet. A marker post in the distance put me on the right
track. The going was OK until I passed through a couple of gates
and it became mud and morass. Approaching the Coach Road it
became even worse and when I got there a sign pointed back the
way I’d come indicating OK for horses & bikes. It’s OK for
neither, just the dedicated walker with waterproof boots. I
crossed the coach road and started to climb the steep hillside
to the east of Wolf Crags. My original plan was to trek over
Great Dodd but found the path to it in a very bad way. large
areas of standing water and mud made for long detours. I decided
to give it a miss and head across rough open ground up to the
edge of Wolf Crags. There was no path but at least no large
puddles and bog either. |

Looking up Mosedale Beck to Wolf
Crags. |
At the edge of Wolf Crags I had some nice views down Mosedale
Beck and a possible descent route that isn’t shown on any map. I
descended steeply down to Mosedale Beck and called at Wolfcrag
Fold (sheepfold) on the way. It has long since fallen down but
some of the construction stones are exceptionally large. Down at
the Old Coach Road I missed the turn off to the faint path down
by the beck so had to cross rough ground to find it. |
Towards Blencathra. |
It turned out to be quite pleasant and gave nice views up
Mosedale Beck. It's strange that no map shows the path. It got
wet further on but nothing as bad as Sandbeds Moss. I eventually
reached Lobbs then an easy downhill wander along the track back
to my car. |
