The forecast was for the hottest day of the year so far so I
decided to park in he laybye to the west of Threlkeld where I
knew there was a tree to shelter under. |
Railway Bridge and rivets. |
The forecast turned out to be wrong for Cumbria. I parked under
the tree and headed for the old railway at Threlkeld Bridge. The
access to the railway footpath was indistinct and said ‘Farm
Shop’ which wasn’t helpful. The path is narrow with lots of
vegetation on either side. The old railway bridge over the River
Glenderamackin is interesting as it has all its rivets showing
on the top metal plates. |
St John's in the Vale. |
Further on I left the path to join the busy B5322 where I headed
south. It was busy and dangerous on the initial bends so I
hurried along to the start of the old coach road where I could
follow the track in safety and quiet. I headed gently uphill
until the silence was drowned out by a passing motorbike coming
the other way. Before climbing into the trees and quarry area I
stopped briefly to listen to the reassuring thump, thump of the
Hydram water Pump over the wall. Up through the old quarry
workings I climbed to the trees to the stile over the fence. The
stile had fallen apart but the barbed wire fence was still
there. I followed the fence to a point higher up where it had
fallen down and I was able to climb easily over. I was now on
grass and open ground following the path up to Wanthwaite Bank.
The cloud level was relatively low and taking the diagonal path
up Red Screes I was soon in the mist. |
Clough Head. |
I pressed on to the summit of Clough Head and the trig post. As
expected there were no views so I continued over to the NE and
by the time I’d descended to White Pke I had nice views to the
north. Descending to the old coach road I met the first two
walkers of the day. A couple heading up. On reaching the track I
had a quick look at an old railway coach in the field then
headed west to start my descent to Newsham. |
Old railway carriage. |
Before reaching the main path I saw one on the map that I
hadn’t used. I followed it through the rushes and soon realised
there was no such path. I pressed on to reach the stream and
main path. Below Newsham I was on tarmac to the bridge then
across fields to Threlkeld and St Mary’s Church. I tried the
door and it was open. |
St Mary's Church. |
St Mary's Church. |
St Mary's Church. |
I’m sure I’ve tried it before and aways found it locked. It was
nice inside but I found the external appearance with its
rendering and strange architecture rather ugly. I joined the
road for the short walk back to my car. |
