Due to the clock change last weekend my morning drive to
cumbria was slightly lighter. I returned to Fellside near Hesket
Newmarket to do so more investigation on the fells. It was
cloudy bright when I set off south along the old mine access
track. |

Heading up Dale Beck. |
|
Over the footbridge across Dale Beck I climbed a short
connecting path to a higher path and continued south for a short
distance before turning straight up the fellside to an old mine
spoil heap. It was the first of two on this climb and by the top
of the spoil heap was the collapsed entrance. Another short
climb and I reached another mine which was very similar.. Above
it was a narrow old track that I followed to Wet Smale Gill
which seemed to be running with very clear water and may have
come from a higher spring. |

The views north were very clear across the estuary. Before
reaching Red Gill I turned right to head straight up the grassy
fellside to join a higher grass track to head to the right of
Little Sca Fell. On the north side Great Sca Fell I turned east
to follow a grass track that petered out shortly before I
reached the site of an old shaft working. The sunken shaft
backfill was a shallow pool of water. |

Gill. |
|
I was at the top of Silver Gill and crossed Balliway Rigg to
look steeply down into Roughton Gill. It took a while to find
the safest way down the steep grassy slope to the north. I
reached some old workings and a stone structure but couldn’t
tell what it had been. Another steep descent and I reached
Roughton Gill where I managed to hop across and a steep scramble
up to join a safe and easy path through more old mine workings. |

View across the estuary to Scotland. |
|
The path followed the contour to Clints Gill where I crossed to
join the faint path I’d been on a couple of weeks ago. I
followed it down to Dale Beck where I could see several walkers
on the main track on the other side. My route continued along
the steep east side of the beck until joining the main track
near the footbridge. It was now an easy walk back to the car. |
