The sky was clear at midnight and the moon had only just passed full so I went out to try a few time exposure night shots. By morning the rain was back but the wind semed a little less. I waited in the tent and by 11am the rain had stopped. I decided to pack up camp and move on, even if for just a short distance. I returned to yesterday's path heading NW up Lingmoor Fell I had to climb the locked gate again across the path. I hate these obstructions especially when carrying a heavy pack.

A time exposure by moonlight from Lingmoor Fell.

A wet, windy and misty Lingmoor Fell.

Being a Saturday there were a lot more people out. The wind seemed just as strong as yesterday as I started to climb. The first group of walkers were taking their time and I soon passed them. There were a few old quarry buildings around and I must return on a better day to check them out. The cloud lifted just enough to give me a faint view of the summit ridge but it was quite difficult to negociate in the high winds. Another party of walkers had gone on ahead and I just managed to photograph them vanishing into the mist. I needed my tripod to take the photo as I couldn't keep myself steady, let alone the camera. The path squeezed between rocks and a newly refurbished fence with shiny new barbed wire along its top. This is not the sort of thing the walker needs to steady himself against the roaring wind. What on earth are the Cumbrian planners doing allowing such dangers to be erected at throat height.

I've never seen the point of barbed wire anyway. Eventually I got a glimpse of Lingmoor Tarn below through the mist. I descended towards it for a couple of reasons. To get some shelter and start to look for a campsite. Its several years since I was last at the tarn and it didn't look its best today in the cloud and wind. The ground was still horribly wet and I waded through knee high heather to try and avoid the worse of the wet. To the right of the tarn the views opened up and I could see down the lower part of the Langdale valley. I was under cloud but the valley bottom seemed to have some sunshine on it. I managed to get the tent up between hurricane force winds and brief lulls. The rain kept away but the wind seemed to get worse. I had one brief excursion with the camera but I soon retreated to the tent as the wind was still too fierce.
