Most of the drive north along the M6 was quite misty and fog over some stretches near Tebay. The temperature there dropped to 1decC. Leaving the motorway at Penrith was in sunshine. I arrived at the start of my walk below Rake Trod shortly before 8am. My objective is to have another go at taking some drone photos of the enclosure on Carrock Fell.

Heading for the summit.

The blue blob is me.

Carrock Hill Fort.
The recent long dry spell of weather had made the first steep part of the climb very tricky. When it became narrow and winding through loose dusty gravel it was impossible to get a proper grip. I tried to find as much grass as possible but that wasn’t much better. I was very thankful to get the steep bit out of the way and reach the safer heather area and the ancient stone sheepfold. The sky was mostly clear but a bit hazy.

Old mine and spoil heap.
My main concern was the wind which was quite gusty at times. When I reached the summit cairn in the enclosure I headed north to descend a bit and find some shelter from the wind. I launched the drone and was pleased that there were no wind warnings. I could hear voices as a group of walkers reached the summit. I took some drone photos, packed up and continued over the summit to then head for the descent to the north. There is a very nice green path that descends gently down towards Carrock Beck. Near the bottom I left it to turn right and visit the site on an old mine adit and spoil heap. The entrance was long collapsed. There was little wind so I took some drone photos then continued down on the path to the road. Then just over a km back to the car.
