The clock change is only a week away and this morning’s drive to Cumbria was in full daylight. I reached the small surfaced parking layby near Threlkeld and was the first one there. I set off walking into Threlkeld then up the lane past the Primary School. It was too early for the children to be there but lights were on inside. The early drizzle on the drive had stopped and now it was just low cloud. Up past the Blencathra Outdoor Centre a large vehicle was dumping wood chippings into a large container to be used as biomass.

I reached the end of the surfaced road then continued along the valley towards the Glenderaterra headwaters. Across the valley I could see my return route high up on the valley side below Lonscale Fell. I continued steadily upwards until I reached the footbridge at the top. So far I hadn't seen anyone. I crossed the valley and joined the Cumbria Way path to start my return. I stopped by some old ruins to sit a while and eat my sandwiches. I hadn’t been heading south down the valley side long before I met a succession of walkers coming up the trail.

Shepherd's Memorial below the path to Skiddaw.
It is an interesting and picturesque path over mixed ground. Swinging right to the west the track widened and soon took me to the Shepherds Monument. Ahead was the car park and by now many walkers were about and most heading up towards Skiddaw. I took the track down to Brundholme to join the Railway path back towards Threlkeld. The weather had warmed up a lot and blue sky was around.
