Today's objective is to try and get some decent drone photos of the Carrock Fell Hill Fort area but a northerly wind was a bit of a concern. I set off up Rake Trod, a steep diagonal path running up the east side of Carrock Fell underneath the strangely named Scurth. The sky was mostly clear and with the temperature around zero there were icy patches on the trail. Heading into Further Gill Syke the track became steeper for a while before the gradient eased and I reached the stone sheepfold in the heather.

There were patches of snow about as I continued towards the large stone enclosure around the summit area. When I reached the summit cairn the wind was too strong to launch the drone so I retreated to the south wall and found some shelter and a flat stone to launch. As soon as the drone was airborn it struggled in the wind but didn’t give any warnings. I decided to send it up directly vertical and not venture away in any direction. I managed to get some images before the red ‘wind’ warning began to show. I brought it directly down and caught it manually. It was a nice spot to sith in the shelter and eat my sandwiches. I continued west and soon joined the main path which was quite boggy in places. Thankfully there was quite a bit of frozen ground around to stop me sinking into the mire.

Over Miton Hill I descended into the narrow cleft where the Red Gate track is and turned right to start the descent into the Carrock Beck valley. It was an enjoyable descent on the dry green track in the sunshine which now had some warmth in it as I was out of the wind. At the bottom I hopped over Carrock Beck and further on joined the main track down the valley.

I took the right fork then down through between the gorse bushes to join the road at the ford and foot bridge. Turning right and south I walked just under a mile back to the car.
