I had a very gloomy and dark drive north along the M6 to the exit at Penrith. I’d set off about 20mins earlier than usual and so had a darker drive. Heading west along the A66 the just past full moon was starting its descent into the western sky. I reached Wanthwaite Bridge and then to the small parking area. It was still dark when I arrived and was just coming light at I climbed the stile to follow St John’s Beck upstream. I reached the large isolated Bridge House with no sign of life or lights on although a car was parked behind the barn. there.
I turned right and took the path over the small beck and steeply up the hillside to join the main St John’s in the Vale Church access road. The church now has scaffolding around the eastern side. The Youth Outward Bound building was just up the track but there were no vehicles or signs of life. I left the road here to head up along one of the many paths that run over High Rigg.

On a level piece of ground above the buildings is the remains of a fire and logs for sitting round the outside. The was increasing slightly as the sky cleared. I watched a pale moon setting to the NW. I soon reached High Rigg summit and had nice but windy views. I’d hoped to take some drone photos but the wind was too strong. I continued south trying to enjoy the fells but the low clear sun was constantly dazzling the views to the south.
Trees agains the light.

At Wren Crag I descended to the lower path near the main A591 road and turned left to follow the narrow path along the steep slope going down to St John’s Beck. I followed the path to Low Bridge Farm where the honest box cafe was. I must give it a try sometime. My original plan was to stay on the track to return to St John’s Church but decided to follow the path along St Jon’s Beck instead. The path follows the top if a high bank along the west side of the river and is a flood defence to prevent flooding of the fields. It was an easy wander back to Bridge House and on to the lane where my car was parked.
