The weather forecast was good for clear cold skies in Cumbria. There was a little snow as I left home and a temperature of -7degC as I passed Tebay on the M6. I reached the laybye to the west of Threlkeld and was the first car there.

Walk/cycleway.

It was -3degC as I set off along the railway path towards Keswick. My main concern was black ice on the tarmac surface but thankfully there were only standard ice patches where draining water was coming from the fields. The tunnels were festooned with icicles making for interesting views.

Railway tunnel.

Bobbin Mill tunnel.

Forge Road bridge.

Steps up from the river.
I saw a few walkers but only one cyclist. This is certainly not a route I’d ride on a bike with the cold weather and ice. After the Bobbin Mill tunnel I took the right path down to Forge Bridge over the River Greta. I took the delightful flight of stairs up through the old road and then into Brundholme Woods.

Through Brindholme Woods.
Road subsidence.

Glenderaterra Beck.
I was now high above the valley bottom and things warmed up a bit as some sunshine was able to shine through. Further on I descended through the woods, down the path and over the footbridge to Derwentfolds.

Lonscale Fell.

I was then on the minor lane and found it difficult in places with compacted snow & ice. It was a pleasant walk with nice sunny views of Blencathra.
