I was in Caldbeck, Cumbria for an evening talk by the Simon Yates the mountaineer and explorer. On the way I’d called in Ambleside to collect my bike after some gear modifications and as it was early enough went for a walk on the hills.

Hazy view to Fell Side buildings

I left my car near the Village Hall and set off up the lane to the south. It was very hazy weather and I couldn’t even see the distant fells. I turned right and up the hill along another road then turned left to the Fell Side buildings.

Old sheep shelter

I left the road here and followed an old mine track up onto the fells. The whole area is criss crossed with old green tracks and there are many sink holes and old mine workings. Over Deer Hills I joined the main track over Caldbeck Fell then took a direct pathless line up to High Pike summit.

‘He is a portion of that loveliness
that once made more lovely’

It felt quite cold in the wind as the temperature was only 3degC. There is a summit trig post but it now has an information plate on it showing the distant hills. Nearby is a slate memorial bench with some individual plates. The main inscription is from Shelley and reads ‘He is a portion of that loveliness that once made more lovely’

Old building near the mine workings

I started my descent to the NE and it was very enjoyable as I now had the wind behind me. I rejoined the main track at the old mine workings and continued down to Nether Row where I joined the road. It was nice to see some new dry stone walling being built, though nobody was there. It was an easy walk back into Caldbeck.
