Return to Whittle Wanderer

Lowgill, Cookson's Tenement, Brown Moor, Breaks Head, White Fell, Cumbria.

Parked near Lowgill Viaduct and walked down the lane to Crook of Lune Bridge. There was still quite a bit of snow and ice about as I walked up the lane to Four Lane Ends. It was difficult walking up to Cookson’s Tenement and on to Castley because of the icy road surface. After Castley it was easier as the snow had drifted across the track and I was walking on snow. Going through the gate I turned left up Castley Knotts and enjoyed the views as I walked through the snow to Brown Moor to find some shelter to eat my sandwiches.

A sheltered lunch spot.

Chilly Howgill summits.

I followed the level ground then steeply up through good snow to the summit of Fell Head. At Breaks Head quite a lot of snow had drifted and there were ski tracks, though I didn’t see anybody. Over the Heights of Bush How I headed to White Fell Head and took the main path to the SW to descend the main ridge of White Fell.

CThere was quite a bit of drifted snow and part way down I had to strap my ice studs on. When I reached the main beck I was able to take them off but at Castley I was back on the road and had to be careful all the way back to the car.
