Return to Whittle Wanderer

Sedbergh, The Calf, Stockless, Knoutberry, Ravenstonedale, Cumbria. Wed 13 Sep 2006

I drove to the village of Ravenstonedale near Kirkby Stephen. I parked up out of the way and waited for the 7:25am 564 bus to Kendal which arrived on time. It was mostly occupied by teenagers going to school, presumably Sedbergh or Kendal. I sat back to enjoy the ride along the A683. I couldn’t see much of the mountains but enjoyed it anyway. I got off in Sedbergh about 20mns later to find the small town already up, awake, and the market being set up. The sky was overcast but dry. I walked up the narrow lane opposite the library, past the playing fields and up to Lockbank Farm. I then headed north following a green path steeply up towards Winder.

The bus arrives in Ravenstonedale.

West view from Knoutberry.

I didn’t head for the summit but the path that passes it to the east. It’s a steady pull up but soon I was able to look down below onto Sedbergh and its surroundings, though the hazy weather stopped the chance of any good views. From now the path is good and the gradients not too steep. Unfortunately the weather began to deteriorate and by the time I was approaching The Calf the first spots of rain had started. I was a bit slow getting my waterproofs out and before I had chance to get at my leggings my trousers were soaked, so I didn’t bother with over trousers. I took the right trail to descend into Bowderdale but couldn’t see anything through the driving rain. I was hoping for a view of Yarlside, which is across the valley to the right, but no luck.

At the valley bottom the weather improved a bit and the rain almost stopped. At Hazel Gill I turned right, crossed the river, and headed up the left side of Great Randy Gill. There was no footpath but the going was reasonably dry and not too bad. I reached the saddle summit and could see nice views ahead. I good path follows the contour to Stockless. Approaching Green Bell there is a substantial green track leading up to the left of the summit but my way was along a minor branch to the right. I followed it down to Knoutberry where I found some shelter from the wind and stopped for lunch.

A brief view through the clouds.

Thornthwaite.

The weather had improved a bit more by the time I set off again. I headed towards Knott and picked up the old trail running towards Thornthwaite. The track continued down and improved when I reached Wye Garth. At Kilnmire I’d reached habitation and a tarmac road which I followed back to Ravenstonedale. Approaching the village I took a left minor path over a footbridge and into the village via a green path. The village of Ravenstonedale has its own excellent website here.
