After yesterday's walk Thursday was really windy , so we made our way back towards Thirlemere, which did not seem to be quite has rough and parked on the car park near the little church. We had the place to ourselves has we made our way up the very steep track, that takes you to the top of Helvellyn. The weather was still being kind to us, although the top was covered in snow, it took us two hours to make the top. Once again we had the place to ourselves while we ate our butties and a drink of coffee. Has we left the top to make our way back the weather changed dramatically, we got a gale force wind and driving hale stones. It really was hard work just managing to stand up, I would hate to be caught out in conditions like that without wearing the correct gear. We met a few people when we had got about halfway down and warned them what to expect on the top. It was a long walk back through the forest to where we had left the car and by this time it was raining very hard, so we got really wet. A complete change of clothing before we got in the car to make our way back home. It had been two hectic days of fell walking but I always feel the effort well worth while, I am not sure about Eric, he will be quite stiff when he gets out of bed tomorrow. Article by Eric Bell. |
