Mosedale Horseshoe, Wasdale, Cumbria. Wed 04 Aug 2004

Another solo walk as Eric is still away on holiday. The drive to Wasdale was rainy and cloudy but as I approached the rain almost stopped, but not quite. I set off walking at 8:55 and followed the path north, over the river by the packhorse bridge then up Mosedale through the trees.

The first part of the walk is a pleasant strole by the trees.

It was quite warm and still very overcast, but I suppose I should be thankful it wasn't raining. At the first sheepfold I headed straight up the fell side at Dorehead Screes. The map doesn't show a right of way but a dashed line denotes a trail. Although steep and wet the going wasn't too bad and it was just a case of plodding on steadily. But it is definitely not a way DOWN off the fell.

Dorehead Tarn

At Dorehead the weather was quite gloomy and rain threatened. I headed NW, up into the cloud and towards Red Pike. I stopped for a quick coffee break then continued. The walking was pleasant in the almost windless conditions, even though there was nothing to see. It was a bit uncomfortable descending the slippery boulders to Wind Gap, as I couldn't see far due to the cloud. By the time I was climbing up to Pillar the rain started. On the summit plateau I had to trust my compass to find my way off. The descent to Black Sail Pass seemed to take ages and the trail was in a terrible condition due to the heavy rain.
When I did get to the pass I'd dropped below the cloud and could see where I was going. The path back to Wasdale was easy and not too wet. Looking across Mosedale I could see Dorehead Screes that I'd climbed earlier in the day. It looked much worse from here than it did climbing it.
